Huai flower buns, a beloved traditional Chinese snack, are prized for their fragrant, sweet flavor and soft texture. Here’s a simple guide to making them at home.
Ingredients:
- 300g all-purpose flour
- 150g fresh huai flowers (cleaned and chopped)
- 1 tsp yeast, 1 tbsp sugar, 150ml warm water
- 1 tbsp cooking oil, a pinch of salt
Steps:
1. Prepare the dough: Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water, let sit for 5 minutes until foamy. Mix flour and salt, gradually add the yeast mixture and oil, knead into a smooth dough. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours until doubled in size.
2. Make the filling: Chop huai flowers finely. Mix with 2 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste) and a dash of oil; set aside.
3. Shape the buns: Punch down the dough, divide into small equal portions. Roll each into a round wrapper, place a spoonful of filling in the center, pleat the edges to seal, forming a bun.
4. Steam: Place buns on a lined steamer, leaving space between them. Let them rest for 15 minutes. Steam over high heat for 15–20 minutes. Turn off the heat and let them sit for 5 more minutes before serving.
Tips: Use fresh huai flowers for the best aroma. Avoid opening the steamer immediately after cooking to prevent deflation. Enjoy these delicate, sweet buns as a breakfast or dessert treat!
