A Comprehensive Guide to Making Grape Jam

Making grape jam is a delightful way to preserve the sweet taste of summer. Follow this simple guide to create a delicious batch with just a few ingredients.

Start by selecting ripe, sweet grapes—Concord grapes are ideal for their rich flavor. Wash them thoroughly, then remove stems and crush the fruit using a potato masher or blender. For every 4 cups of crushed grapes, add 1 cup of granulated sugar and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice (the lemon enhances flavor and aids preservation).

Pour the mixture into a large pot and bring it to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Once boiling, reduce the heat and let it simmer for 20–30 minutes, or until the mixture thickens. To test for doneness, place a small spoonful on a chilled plate—if it wrinkles when pushed, the jam is ready.

Remove the pot from the heat and skim off any foam. Carefully ladle the hot jam into sterilized jars, leaving ¼ inch of headspace. Wipe the rims, seal the lids, and process the jars in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes to ensure long-term storage.

Allow the jars to cool completely before labeling. Enjoy your homemade grape jam on toast, pancakes, or as a glaze for meats!
