How to Make Sesame Seed Crackers: A Simple Guide

Sesame seed crackers, or "瓜子酥" in Chinese, are crispy, nutty treats loved for their delicate texture and rich aroma. Making them at home is easy with this simple guide.

Ingredients: You’ll need 200g all-purpose flour, 80g powdered sugar, 50g sesame seeds, 100g unsalted butter (softened), 1 egg yolk, and a pinch of salt.

Steps:

1. Mix dry ingredients: Combine flour, powdered sugar, and salt in a bowl. Whisk thoroughly.

2. Add wet ingredients: Cut in the softened butter using your fingertips or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Beat the egg yolk and mix in until the dough comes together.

3. Shape the dough: Roll the dough into a 1cm-thick log. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.

4. Coat with sesame seeds: Unwrap the log and brush lightly with water. Roll generously in sesame seeds to coat evenly.

5. Bake: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Slice the log into 0.5cm-thick rounds and place on a baking sheet. Bake for 15–18 minutes until golden brown. Let cool completely—they crisp up as they cool!

Tips: For extra flavor, add a teaspoon of vanilla extract or a dash of five-spice powder to the dough. Store in an airtight container for up to two weeks. Enjoy these crackers as a snack or pair them with tea for a delightful treat!
