How to Make a Marbled Cake Roll: A Step-by-Step Guide

A marbled cake roll, with its elegant swirls and light, fluffy texture, is a delightful treat that’s easier to make than it looks. Here’s a simple guide to crafting this dessert at home.

Ingredients:

- 4 eggs (separated)

- 60g sugar (divided)

- 60g cake flour

- 30g milk

- 30g vegetable oil

- 1 tsp vanilla extract

- Cocoa powder (for marbling)

Steps:

1. Prepare Batter: Separate egg whites and yolks. Beat egg whites until foamy, then gradually add 40g sugar until stiff peaks form. In another bowl, mix egg yolks, remaining 20g sugar, milk, oil, and vanilla until smooth. Gently fold the yolk mixture into the egg whites, then sift in flour and fold until just combined.

2. Create Marble Effect: Divide the batter into two portions. Mix 1 tbsp cocoa powder into one portion. Spoon plain batter into a parchment-lined baking sheet, then dollop cocoa batter on top. Use a toothpick to gently swirl the batters for a marble pattern.

3. Bake: Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Bake for 12-15 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.

4. Roll: Immediately invert the cake onto a clean towel dusted with sugar. Roll it up with the towel while warm, then let cool completely.

5. Serve: Unroll, spread with whipped cream or jam, reroll, and dust with powdered sugar. Slice and enjoy your perfect marbled cake roll!
