Braised pork with quail eggs is a beloved Chinese dish, known for its tender meat, savory sauce, and bite-sized egg delights. Here’s a simple yet delicious recipe to recreate it at home.
Ingredients:
- 500g pork belly, cut into 2cm cubes
- 20 quail eggs, boiled and peeled
- 3 tbsp soy sauce (divided)
- 2 tbsp dark soy sauce
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 star anise
- 1 slice ginger
- 2 cloves garlic, smashed
- Oil for searing
- Water or broth, enough to cover
Steps:
1. Prep the pork: Boil pork cubes in boiling water for 3 minutes to remove impurities. Drain and rinse.
2. Sear the meat: Heat oil in a pot over medium heat. Sear pork until golden brown, then add ginger, garlic, and star anise to fragrance.
3. Simmer: Add 1 tbsp light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, and sugar. Stir until pork is coated. Pour in water/broth, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
4. Add quail eggs: Gently place quail eggs into the pot. Add 2 tbsp light soy sauce. Simmer for another 15-20 minutes, until pork is tender and sauce thickens.
5. Serve: Adjust seasoning, garnish with chopped scallions, and enjoy with rice.
This dish balances rich, savory flavors with the delicate texture of quail eggs, making it a perfect comfort meal for any occasion!
