Crispy Sweet and Sour Tofu: A Step-by-Step Guide

Crispy sweet and sour tofu is a beloved vegetarian dish, loved for its golden crust, tender interior, and tangy-sweet sauce. Here’s a detailed guide to making it at home.

Ingredients:

- 1 block firm tofu (pressed to remove excess water)

- 1 cup cornstarch

- 2 cups vegetable oil (for frying)

- 1 bell pepper, cubed

- 1/2 onion, sliced

- 3 tbsp tomato paste

- 2 tbsp soy sauce

- 2 tbsp vinegar

- 3 tbsp sugar

- 1 tsp garlic powder

- Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

1. Prepare the tofu: Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes. Roll each cube in cornstarch until evenly coated, shaking off excess.

2. Deep-fry: Heat oil in a wok or deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry tofu in batches for 3-4 minutes until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towels.

3. Make the sauce: In a small bowl, mix tomato paste, soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Set aside.

4. Stir-fry veggies: In the same wok, stir-fry bell pepper and onion for 2 minutes until slightly softened.

5. Combine: Pour the sauce over the veggies, bring to a simmer, then add the crispy tofu. Toss gently to coat, cooking for 1 minute more.

Serve hot over rice for a flavorful, satisfying meal. Enjoy this restaurant-quality dish at home!
