How to Make Homemade Hawthorn Jam

Making hawthorn jam is a delightful way to preserve the tangy sweetness of this seasonal fruit. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to create a rich, flavorful spread.

First, wash 500g of fresh hawthorns, remove the stems, and cut out the cores. For a smoother texture, you can peel them, but this step is optional. Next, cook the hawthorns with 200ml of water in a pot over medium heat until they soften (about 15–20 minutes). Mash them with a spoon or potato masher to your desired consistency—some prefer chunky, while others like it smooth.

Add 300g of sugar (adjust to taste) and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice (to enhance flavor and aid preservation). Stir continuously over low heat until the sugar dissolves completely and the mixture thickens (about 10–15 minutes). To test for doneness, drop a small amount on a cold plate—if it holds its shape, it’s ready.

Pour the hot jam into sterilized jars, seal tightly, and let it cool. Store in the refrigerator for up to a month. Enjoy it on toast, pancakes, or as a topping for yogurt! This homemade jam is free of preservatives and bursting with natural flavor, making it a perfect homemade treat.
