How to Make Taro with Braised Pork: A Step-by-Step Guide

Taro with braised pork is a beloved Chinese dish, celebrated for its tender meat, melt-in-your-mouth taro, and rich, savory sauce. Here’s a detailed guide to crafting this flavorful meal.

Ingredients:

500g pork belly, 400g taro, 5-6 dried shiitake mushrooms, 2 tbsp light soy sauce, 1 tbsp dark soy sauce, 1 tbsp sugar, 1 tsp five-spice powder, 1 cup broth, and cooking oil.

Steps:

1. Prepare the ingredients: Boil pork belly until tender, then cool and slice into 1cm-thick pieces. Peel and slice taro into 0.5cm rounds. Soak shiitake mushrooms until soft, then slice.

2. Pan-fry the pork: Heat oil in a wok, sear pork slices until golden on both sides. Remove excess oil.

3. Sauté the taro: In the same wok, fry taro slices until lightly browned, then set aside.

4. Layer and braise: Arrange a layer of taro at the bottom of a clay pot, followed by pork, mushrooms, and sauce ingredients. Repeat layers, ending with taro. Pour broth over.

5. Simmer: Cover and cook over low heat for 30–40 minutes, until taro is soft and the sauce thickens. Garnish with scallions before serving.

Tips: For extra flavor, marinate the pork overnight. Ensure taro is tender to avoid a mushy texture. This dish pairs perfectly with steamed rice, offering a comforting blend of sweetness and umami. Enjoy!
