How to Make Sweet Potato Rice Cakes: A Simple Guide

Sweet potato rice cakes, or *Hong Nao Gao*, are a beloved Asian snack with a soft, chewy texture and natural sweetness. Here’s an easy, step-by-step guide to making them at home.

Ingredients: 200g steamed sweet potato (mashed), 150g glutinous rice flour, 2 tbsp sugar (adjust to taste), 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 cup warm water, and optional toppings like sesame seeds or crushed peanuts.

Steps:

1. Prepare the Sweet Potato: Peel and steam the sweet potato until tender, then mash it into a smooth puree. Let it cool slightly.

2. Mix the Dough: In a bowl, combine the mashed sweet potato, glutinous rice flour, sugar, and salt. Gradually add warm water while kneading until a soft, non-sticky dough forms (about 5-7 minutes). If the dough is too dry, add more water one tablespoon at a time.

3. Shape the Cakes: Divide the dough into 8-10 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten it into a small disc (about 1cm thick).

4. Cook: Option 1: Pan-fry Heat 1 tbsp oil in a non-stick pan over medium-low heat. Cook each cake for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown. Option 2: Steam Place the cakes on a parchment-lined steamer and cook for 15-20 minutes until soft.

5. Serve: Enjoy warm as is, or coat with sesame seeds/peanuts. For extra flavor, drizzle with honey or maple syrup.

These cakes are best eaten fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for 2-3 days. Reheat lightly before serving!
