Tangyuan, sweet glutinous rice balls, are a beloved Chinese dessert, and rose-flavored ones add a romantic, aromatic twist. Here’s a simple guide to making them from scratch.
Ingredients: For the dough, you’ll need 200g glutinous rice flour, 100ml warm water, and 1 tsp sugar. For the filling, mix 50g rose jam (or mashed dried roses with honey), 20g chopped nuts, and a pinch of salt. Optional: a few drops of rose water for extra fragrance.
Steps:
1. Make the dough: In a bowl, combine glutinous rice flour and sugar. Gradually add warm water, kneading until a smooth, non-sticky dough forms. Let it rest for 15 minutes.
2. Prepare the filling: Mix rose jam, nuts, and salt (and rose water, if using) until well combined. Chill for 10 minutes to firm up.
3. Shape the tangyuan: Divide the dough into small balls (about 15g each). Flatten each into a circle, place a teaspoon of filling in the center, and pinch the edges to seal, rolling gently into smooth balls.
4. Cook: Bring a pot of water to a boil. Drop in the tangyuan, and cook until they float (about 3-5 minutes). For extra flavor, add a few rock sugar cubes or a pinch of osmanthus to the water.
Serve warm in a light ginger syrup or plain. These fragrant, pink-hued tangyuan are perfect for festivals or a cozy dessert!
