A Guide to Making Classic Plain Bread

Making plain bread at home is simple and rewarding, requiring just a few basic ingredients: flour, water, yeast, salt, and a little sugar. Here’s a step-by-step guide to achieve a soft, crusty loaf.

Start by activating 1 teaspoon of yeast in 1 cup of warm water (around 110°F) with 1 teaspoon of sugar. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy. In a large bowl, mix 3 cups of all-purpose flour with 1 teaspoon of salt. Gradually add the yeast mixture and 2 tablespoons of olive oil, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.

Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size. Punch down the dough to release air, then shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased bread pan.

Cover and let it rise again for 30–45 minutes. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 25–30 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.

For variations, add herbs, seeds, or a sprinkle of flour on top for extra texture. Enjoy your homemade plain bread with soups, spreads, or on its own!
