How to Make Homemade Sushi: A Step-by-Step Guide

Making sushi at home is fun, affordable, and allows for endless creativity. Follow this simple guide to craft delicious rolls and nigiri like a pro.

Ingredients You’ll Need:

- Sushi rice (short-grain), rice vinegar, sugar, salt

- Nori (seaweed sheets), fresh fish (salmon, tuna), or veggies (cucumber, avocado)

- Soy sauce, wasabi, pickled ginger (for serving)

Step 1: Prepare the Sushi Rice

Rinse 2 cups of rice until water runs clear, then cook with 2 cups of water. Once done, mix 2 tbsp rice vinegar, 1 tbsp sugar, and 1 tsp salt in a small bowl until dissolved. Gently fold this into the hot rice with a wooden spoon. Let it cool to room temperature.

Step 2: Assemble the Roll

Place a nori sheet on a bamboo mat (or plastic wrap). Wet your hands to prevent sticking, then spread a thin layer of rice over the nori, leaving 1 inch empty at the top. Arrange your fillings (e.g., sliced fish and avocado) horizontally in the center.

Step 3: Roll and Slice

Using the mat, lift the nori and roll it tightly over the fillings, like a jelly roll. Moisten the empty edge to seal the roll. With a sharp knife, cut the roll into 6-8 pieces, wiping the blade between cuts for clean slices.

Step 4: Serve

Arrange the sushi on a plate with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger. For nigiri, simply form a small rice ball and top with a slice of fish.

Experiment with different fillings, and enjoy your homemade sushi!
