How to Steam Cod: A Simple Guide

Steamed cod is a healthy, delicious dish celebrated for its tender flesh and delicate flavor. Here’s a basic guide to preparing it perfectly.

First, gather fresh cod fillets (about 500g), ginger (sliced), scallions (chopped), soy sauce, cooking oil, and a splash of rice wine. Rinse the cod under cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Lightly score the flesh in a few places to ensure even cooking.

Next, arrange ginger slices at the bottom of a heatproof dish. Place the cod on top, then drizzle with rice wine. Steam over high heat for 8–10 minutes (depending on thickness) until the fish is opaque and flakes easily with a fork.

Once steamed, remove the dish and discard the ginger. Top with fresh scallions. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a small pan until shimmering, then pour over the scallings to release their aroma. Finally, drizzle 2–3 tablespoons of light soy sauce over the fish.

For extra flavor, you can add mushrooms or tofu beneath the cod before steaming. Serve hot with steamed rice for a light, satisfying meal. This method preserves the cod’s natural taste while keeping it low in fat—perfect for healthy eating!
