How to Make Pocket Bread: A Simple Guide

Pocket bread, also known as pita bread, is a versatile Middle Eastern staple perfect for stuffing with savory or sweet fillings. Making it at home is easier than you think! Here’s a basic recipe to get you started.

Ingredients:

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast, 1 tsp sugar, 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C), 1 tsp salt, 2 tbsp olive oil.

Steps:

1. Activate yeast: Mix yeast, sugar, and warm water in a bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

2. Make dough: Combine flour and salt in a large bowl. Pour in yeast mixture and olive oil. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour (or until doubled).

3. Shape: Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal balls. Roll each into a ¼-inch thick circle.

4. Cook: Preheat oven to 475°F (245°C). Bake circles on a baking sheet for 5-7 minutes until puffed and lightly golden. For a pocket effect, bake them directly on a hot oven rack or a preheated cast-iron skillet.

Serving Ideas:

Slice horizontally to fill with hummus, grilled veggies, falafel, or even chocolate spread for dessert. Enjoy your homemade pocket bread fresh!
