How to Make Stir-Fried Yam: A Simple Guide

Stir-fried yam is a quick, healthy, and versatile dish loved for its crisp texture and mild flavor. Here’s a basic guide to help you master it.

Ingredients: Fresh yam (500g), garlic (3 cloves, minced), cooking oil (2 tbsp), salt (½ tsp), a pinch of sugar (optional), and green onions for garnish. Optional add-ins: sliced carrots, bell peppers, or mushrooms for extra color and nutrients.

Steps:

1. Prep the yam: Peel the yam and cut it into thin, uniform slices (about 2mm thick). Soak the slices in cold water for 10 minutes to remove excess starch, then drain and pat dry completely—this ensures a crispy texture when stir-fried.

2. Heat the wok: Place a wok or large skillet over high heat. Add oil and swirl to coat. Once hot, toss in minced garlic and stir-fry for 10 seconds until fragrant.

3. Stir-fry the yam: Add the yam slices and stir-fry continuously for 3–4 minutes until they turn slightly translucent and tender. If using optional veggies, add them now and cook for 2 more minutes.

4. Season: Sprinkle in salt, sugar (if using), and a dash of light soy sauce for umami. Toss well to combine. Cook for another 1 minute until evenly seasoned.

5. Serve: Garnish with chopped green onions and serve hot as a side dish or light main course.

Tips: For a richer flavor, you can add a teaspoon of oyster sauce or a drizzle of sesame oil before serving. Avoid overcrowding the wok to maintain the yam’s crispness. Enjoy this wholesome, low-calorie dish that pairs perfectly with steamed rice!
