How to Make Whole Wheat Bread: A Comprehensive Guide

Whole wheat bread, a nutritious and hearty alternative to white bread, is simple to make at home. Here’s a detailed guide to crafting the perfect loaf.

Ingredients: Start with 3 cups whole wheat flour, 1¼ cups warm water (110°F/43°C), 2¼ tsp active dry yeast, 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup, 1 tsp salt, and 2 tbsp olive oil. Optional additions: 1 tbsp seeds (like flax or sunflower) for extra crunch.

Steps:

1. Activate Yeast: Dissolve yeast and sweetener in warm water. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.

2. Mix Dough: In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Pour in yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.

3. Knead: Turn dough onto a floured surface. Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add more flour if too sticky.

4. First Rise: Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm spot for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size.

5. Shape & Second Rise: Punch down dough, shape into a loaf, and place in a greased 9x5 inch pan. Cover and let rise for 45 minutes.

6. Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped. Cool completely before slicing.

Tips: For softer crust, brush the top with milk before baking. Store in an airtight bag for up to 5 days. Enjoy toasted with avocado, jam, or as a sandwich base!
