How to Make Chinese Red Date Zongzi: A Simple Guide

Zongzi, a iconic Chinese rice dumpling, is loved during festivals. Here’s an easy recipe for sweet red date zongzi, perfect for beginners.

Ingredients:

- 2 cups glutinous rice (soaked for 4 hours)

- 10-15 red dates (pitted, soaked briefly)

- 10 bamboo leaves (scalded in boiling water, then cooled)

- 1 meter cooking string

Steps:

1. Prepare leaves: Soak bamboo leaves in warm water until soft. Wipe dry and fold into cone shapes, leaving an open top.

2. Add fillings: Fill each cone with 1 tbsp glutinous rice, then 2-3 red dates. Top with another 1 tbsp rice to cover.

3. Wrap and tie: Fold the leaf over the rice, tucking edges tightly to form a pyramid. Secure with string, tying knots to prevent unfolding.

4. Cook: Place zongzi in a large pot, add water to cover, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 2-3 hours. Turn off heat and let sit for 30 minutes to enhance flavor.

Serving: Cool slightly, peel leaves, and enjoy. For extra sweetness, drizzle with honey or syrup. These sticky, sweet zongzi are a delightful treat, blending chewy rice with rich, fruity dates. A perfect homemade delicacy to share!
