How to Make Steamed Bean Bun: A Comprehensive Guide

Steamed bean buns (Nian Dou Bao), a beloved Northeast Chinese snack, are soft, chewy, and filled with sweet red bean paste. Making them at home is simple with this step-by-step guide.

Ingredients: For the dough, you’ll need 200g glutinous rice flour, 30g regular flour, 2g yeast, 10g sugar, and 130ml warm water. For the filling, use 200g cooked red beans mashed with 30g sugar and a pinch of salt.

Steps:

1. Prepare the dough: Mix flours, yeast, and sugar. Gradually add warm water and knead into a smooth dough. Let it rest for 30 minutes until slightly risen.

2. Make the filling: Mash red beans with sugar and salt until smooth. Roll into small balls, about 15g each.

3. Shape the buns: Divide the dough into 20g portions. Flatten each, wrap a filling ball inside, and pinch the seams closed. Roll into balls.

4. Steam: Place buns on parchment paper in a steamer. Let them rest for 15 minutes to rise again. Steam over high heat for 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and let them sit for 5 minutes before opening the lid.

Tips: For a sweeter touch, add osmanthus or crushed peanuts to the filling. Serve warm for the best texture!

Enjoy these homemade treats, perfect for chilly days or as a delightful dessert.
