How to Make Red Date Steamed Buns: A Complete Guide

Red date steamed buns, soft, sweet, and nutritious, are a beloved Chinese breakfast or snack. Here’s a simple guide to making them at home.

Ingredients: 300g all-purpose flour, 150ml warm water, 5g yeast, 30g sugar, 8-10 red dates (pitted and chopped), a pinch of salt.

Steps:

1. Activate yeast: Mix yeast, sugar, and warm water in a bowl. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.

2. Make dough: Combine flour and salt in a large bowl. Pour in the yeast mixture and knead into a smooth, elastic dough (about 10 minutes). Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

3. Shape buns: Punch down the dough. Roll it into a log, divide into 6-8 equal pieces. Flatten each piece, place a teaspoon of chopped red dates in the center, and seal the edges. Shape into round buns.

4. Second rise: Place buns on a parchment-lined steamer tray. Cover and let them rise for 20 minutes.

5. Steam: Bring water to a boil in a steamer. Add the buns, leaving space between them. Steam over medium heat for 15-18 minutes. Turn off the heat and let them sit for 5 minutes before opening the lid.

Tips: For extra flavor, add a little honey or cinnamon to the filling. Ensure the dough is well-kneaded for a soft texture. Enjoy these buns warm with a cup of tea!
