Colorful tangyuan, vibrant and festive, are a delightful treat for any occasion. Making them at home is simple and fun—here’s a step-by-step guide.
Ingredients You’ll Need:
- For the dough: 200g glutinous rice flour, 100ml warm water, 1 tbsp sugar.
- For natural coloring: Matcha powder (green), beetroot juice (pink), purple sweet potato paste (purple), and turmeric powder (yellow).
- Fillings: Sesame paste, peanut butter, or red bean paste.
Steps:
1. Prepare the Dough: Mix glutinous rice flour and sugar in a bowl. Gradually add warm water and knead into a smooth dough. Divide the dough into 4 equal portions.
2. Add Colors: Kneed each portion with a natural coloring agent: 1 tsp matcha for green, 2 tbsp beetroot juice for pink, 1 tbsp purple sweet potato paste for purple, and ½ tsp turmeric for yellow. Adjust until vibrant.
3. Shape the Tangyuan: Roll each colored dough into small balls. Flatten each ball, place a teaspoon of filling in the center, and seal tightly by pinching the edges. Roll gently into smooth spheres.
4. Cook: Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add tangyuan and cook until they float (about 5-7 minutes). For extra flavor, cook in sweet ginger syrup or coconut milk.
Serving Suggestions:
Serve warm, drizzled with honey or sprinkled with crushed nuts. They’re perfect for Lunar New Year, family gatherings, or as a colorful dessert.
With endless color and filling combinations, colorful tangyuan are a creative way to celebrate tradition!
