A Simple Guide to Making Sushi at Home

Making sushi at home is easier than you think! With a few basic ingredients and tools, you can create delicious rolls, nigiri, and more. Here’s a simple guide to get you started.

First, gather your ingredients: sushi rice (short-grain works best), nori (dried seaweed), fresh fish (like salmon or tuna), cucumber, avocado, and soy sauce for serving. You’ll also need a bamboo rolling mat, sharp knife, and bowl for rice seasoning.

Step 1: Prepare the Rice

Rinse the rice until the water runs clear, then cook it according to package directions. While hot, mix rice with a seasoning of rice vinegar, sugar, and salt—this gives sushi its signature tang. Let it cool to room temperature.

Step 2: Assemble Your Roll

Place a sheet of nori on the bamboo mat, shiny side down. Wet your hands to prevent sticking, then spread a thin layer of rice over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top. Add fillings like sliced fish, cucumber, or avocado along the center.

Step 3: Roll and Cut

Using the mat, tightly roll the sushi from the bottom up, tucking the border to seal. Press gently to shape, then slice into 6-8 pieces with a wet knife. For nigiri, press a small amount of rice into an oval, top with fish, and wrap with a strip of nori if desired.

Serve with pickled ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce. Experiment with fillings like cooked crab or mango for vegetarian options. With practice, you’ll master this classic dish in no time!
