How to Make Scallion Tofu: A Simple Guide

Scallion tofu, a beloved Chinese dish, is celebrated for its fresh, savory flavor and minimal prep time. Here’s a basic recipe and creative variations to suit different tastes.

Classic Version

Start with firm tofu (300g), cut into 1-inch cubes. Gently pan-fry in 2 tbsp oil until golden on all sides, about 5 minutes. Remove and set aside. In the same pan, sauté 3 chopped scallions (white parts only) until fragrant. Add the tofu back, then pour in a mixture of 1 tbsp light soy sauce, 1 tsp sesame oil, and a pinch of sugar. Toss gently to coat, then cook for 1 minute. Top with remaining scallion greens and serve hot.

Spicy Twist

For heat lovers, add a diced chili or 1/2 tsp chili crisp during the scallion-sautéing step. A dash of black vinegar can also balance the spice.

Vegetarian Delight

Toss in blanched broccoli or mushrooms with the tofu for extra nutrients. Stir in 1 tbsp oyster sauce (or vegetarian alternative) for a richer umami taste.

Cold Salad Option

For a refreshing take, skip frying. Combine silken tofu with chopped scallions, a drizzle of soy sauce, sesame oil, and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Chill before serving.

This dish is versatile, quick, and perfect for weeknights. Enjoy its delicate harmony of flavors in just 15 minutes!
