Tangyuan, sweet glutinous rice balls, are a beloved Chinese dessert, especially during festivals. The black sesame version, with its nutty aroma and rich filling, is a favorite. Here’s a simple guide to making them from scratch.
For the Dough:
Mix 200g glutinous rice flour with 100ml warm water gradually. Knead into a smooth, non-sticky dough. Let it rest for 15 minutes.
For the Filling:
Grind 100g roasted black sesame seeds into a fine powder. Mix with 50g powdered sugar, 1 tbsp melted butter, and a pinch of salt. Roll into small balls (about 10g each).
Assembling:
Divide the dough into 20 equal portions. Flatten each into a circle, wrap a sesame filling ball inside, and seal tightly. Roll gently into smooth balls.
Cooking:
Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add tangyuan and cook until they float (about 5-7 minutes). For extra flavor, serve in a sweet ginger syrup or hot broth.
Enjoy these chewy, fragrant treats as a warm dessert or snack!
