How to Make Pumpkin Mantou: A Simple Guide

Pumpkin mantou, a fluffy and slightly sweet steamed bun, is a beloved fall treat. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making this golden delight at home.

Ingredients:

- 200g steamed pumpkin, mashed (about ½ cup)

- 300g all-purpose flour

- 2g active dry yeast

- 20g sugar

- 1 tbsp vegetable oil

- Optional: A pinch of salt for balance.

Steps:

1. Prepare the dough: Mix mashed pumpkin, yeast, sugar, and salt. Gradually add flour, kneading into a smooth, non-sticky dough (add 1-2 tbsp water if too dry). Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

2. Shape the mantou: Punch down the dough and divide it into 6-8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten slightly into a disc. For a classic shape, pleat the edges upward and pinch at the top to form a rounded bun.

3. Second rise: Place the buns on parchment paper, leaving space for expansion. Cover and let them rise for 20-30 minutes.

4. Steam: Bring a steamer to high heat. Arrange the buns (not touching) and steam for 15-18 minutes. Turn off the heat and let them sit for 5 minutes before opening the lid to prevent collapsing.

Tips: Overripe pumpkin adds natural sweetness; adjust sugar to taste. Serve warm with tea or as a snack. Enjoy your homemade pumpkin mantou!
