How to Cook Loofah: A Simple Guide

Loofah, a versatile and nutritious vegetable, is beloved for its mild flavor and tender texture. Here’s a basic guide to preparing it deliciously.

First, select a fresh, young loofah with smooth, green skin—avoid those with yellow spots or soft spots. Wash it thoroughly, then peel the skin (optional for young loofah) and cut it into rounds, half-moons, or thick strips. For less bitterness, sprinkle salt on the pieces, let them sit for 10 minutes, then rinse and squeeze out excess water.

Stir-Fry (Most Common): Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a wok over high heat. Add minced garlic and stir-fry until fragrant. Toss in the loofah and stir-fry for 2–3 minutes. Season with a pinch of salt, 1 teaspoon of light soy sauce, and a dash of sesame oil. For extra flavor, add a pinch of sugar or a chopped chili. Stir-fry until the loofah is tender-crisp, about 5 minutes total. Serve hot.

Soup Option: Simmer loofah slices with pork broth or tomato soup. Add mushrooms or egg for richness, and season with salt and pepper. Cook for 5–7 minutes until soft.

Tip: Loofah cooks quickly—overcooking makes it mushy. Enjoy this healthy dish as a side or light meal!
