How to Make Milk Flower Buns: A Step-by-Step Guide

Milk flower buns, soft, fluffy, and subtly sweet, are a beloved breakfast treat. Here’s a simple guide to making them at home.

Ingredients:

300ml warm milk, 1 tsp active dry yeast, 1 tbsp sugar, 400g all-purpose flour, 1/4 tsp salt, 2 tbsp softened butter, 1 egg (optional, for richness).

Steps:

1. Activate the yeast: Mix warm milk, yeast, and sugar in a bowl. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.

2. Make the dough: Combine flour and salt in a large bowl. Pour in the yeast mixture and egg (if using). Knead until a smooth dough forms. Add butter and knead for 10–15 minutes until elastic.

3. First rise: Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours until doubled in size.

4. Shape the buns: Punch down the dough and roll it into a rectangle. Spread a thin layer of butter (optional for extra flavor), then fold into thirds. Cut into strips and twist each strip into a spiral. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

5. Second rise: Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.

6. Steam or bake: For steaming, cook in a steamer over medium heat for 15–20 minutes. For baking, brush with milk, bake at 180°C (350°F) for 20–25 minutes until golden.

Enjoy these buns warm with butter or jam—the perfect blend of milkiness and tenderness!
