How to Steam Pomfret: A Simple Guide

Steamed pomfret is a beloved dish in Chinese cuisine, prized for its delicate flavor and tender flesh. Here’s a step-by-step guide to preparing this healthy and delicious meal.

Ingredients: 1 fresh pomfret (about 500g), 2-3 slices of ginger, 2 scallions (chopped), 1 tbsp light soy sauce, 1 tsp sesame oil, 1 tbsp cooking wine, and optional cilantro.

Steps:

1. Prepare the fish: Clean the pomfret, scaling and gutting it. Make 2-3 diagonal cuts on both sides to ensure even cooking. Pat dry with paper towels.

2. Season: Rub the fish with a pinch of salt inside and out. Place ginger slices and scallions in the cavity and on top to remove any fishy odor.

3. Steam: Bring water to a boil in a wok or steamer. Place the fish on a heatproof dish, drizzle with cooking wine, and steam for 8-10 minutes (depending on size) until the flesh turns opaque and flakes easily.

4. Finish: Remove the fish, discard the old ginger and scallions, and top with fresh chopped scallions and cilantro. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a pan, pour it over the ingredients, then drizzle with light soy sauce and sesame oil.

Serve hot with steamed rice for a light, flavorful meal. This method preserves the fish’s natural taste while enhancing it with simple, aromatic ingredients. Enjoy!
