How to Make Red Bean Zongzi: A Step-by-Step Guide

Red bean zongzi, a beloved traditional Chinese snack, combines sweet red beans with glutinous rice for a delightful treat. Here’s a simple guide to making it at home.

Ingredients: Glutinous rice (500g), dried red beans (200g), bamboo leaves (20-30), soaked in water for 2 hours; salt (1 tsp), sugar (to taste), cooking twine.

Steps:

1. Prepare ingredients: Soak red beans overnight until soft. Rinse glutinous rice 3-4 times, then drain. Soak bamboo leaves in warm water to soften, wipe dry.

2. Make filling: Boil red beans for 30 mins until tender, mash slightly, mix with sugar (adjust to sweetness).

3. Wrap zongzi: Take 2 bamboo leaves, overlap them to form a cone. Add 1 tbsp rice, 2 tbsp red bean filling, then top with more rice (about 3/4 full). Fold leaves into a pyramid shape, tie tightly with twine.

4. Cook: Place zongzi in a large pot, cover with water (1-2 inches above). Boil on high for 2 hours, then simmer on low for 1 hour. Turn off heat and let sit for 30 mins.

Serve: Cool slightly, peel leaves, and enjoy warm or cold. For extra flavor, drizzle with honey or syrup.

These sweet, chewy zongzi are perfect for festivals or family gatherings!
