How to Make Classic Nougat Candy

Nougat, a beloved sweet treat, is surprisingly easy to make at home with just a few ingredients. Here’s a simple guide to crafting chewy, nutty nougat.

First, gather your supplies: 2 cups granulated sugar, ½ cup corn syrup, ¼ cup water, 2 large egg whites, 1 tsp vanilla extract, and 2 cups mixed nuts (like almonds, peanuts, or pistachios). Grease a 9x9 inch baking tray and line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

In a saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. Heat over medium-high, stirring until the sugar dissolves, then let it boil without stirring until it reaches 250°F (120°F) on a candy thermometer. Meanwhile, beat egg whites in a bowl until stiff peaks form.

Once the syrup hits the right temperature, carefully pour it into the egg whites in a thin stream while continuing to beat with a mixer. Beat for 5–7 minutes until the mixture becomes thick and glossy. Stir in vanilla and nuts quickly.

Pour the mixture into the prepared tray, spreading it evenly with a spatula. Let it set at room temperature for at least 4 hours, or until firm. Cut into squares and enjoy your homemade nougat! Store in an airtight container to keep it fresh. This versatile treat also works with dried fruits or chocolate chips for added flavor.
