Maotai-flavored tofu recipe

A Guide to Making Savory Tofu: A Flavorful Journey

Savory tofu, or "xiāng xiāng dòufu," is a beloved dish celebrated for its rich, umami-packed flavor and tender texture. Here’s a simple yet delicious recipe to recreate it at home.

Ingredients:

- 1 block firm tofu (pressed to remove excess water)

- 2 tbsp soy sauce

- 1 tbsp oyster sauce

- 1 tsp sesame oil

- 1 tsp sugar

- 2 cloves garlic (minced)

- 1 tsp ginger (grated)

- Green onions (chopped, for garnish)

- Cooking oil (for frying)

Steps:

1. Prepare the Tofu: Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes. Lightly fry them in hot oil until golden on all sides, then set aside.

2. Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, mix soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger.

3. Cook: Heat 1 tbsp oil in a wok. Sauté garlic and ginger until fragrant. Add the fried tofu and pour the sauce over it. Simmer for 3–4 minutes, gently stirring to coat the tofu evenly.

4. Finish: Garnish with chopped green onions. Serve hot with steamed rice or noodles.

Tips: For extra depth, add a dash of chili oil or fermented black beans. Pressing the tofu ensures it absorbs the sauce better, enhancing the overall taste. Enjoy this versatile, protein-packed dish that’s both comforting and satisfying!
