How to Make Simple Sushi at Home

Making sushi at home is easier than you think! With a few basic ingredients and tools, you can create delicious rolls in just 30 minutes. Here’s a simple guide to get you started.

First, gather your ingredients: sushi rice (short-grain works best), nori (dried seaweed), fresh vegetables like cucumber and avocado, and your choice of protein such as cooked crab sticks or smoked salmon. You’ll also need rice vinegar, sugar, salt, and soy sauce for seasoning.

Begin by preparing the rice. Rinse it thoroughly, then cook it according to package directions. While the rice cooks, mix 2 tablespoons of rice vinegar, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of salt in a small bowl until dissolved. Once the rice is done, transfer it to a wooden bowl and gently fold in the vinegar mixture. Let it cool to room temperature.

Lay a sheet of nori on a bamboo mat, shiny side down. Wet your hands to prevent sticking and spread a thin layer of rice over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top. Arrange your fillings horizontally in the center of the rice.

Using the bamboo mat, roll the nori tightly away from you, tucking the edge to seal the roll. Slice the roll into 6-8 pieces with a sharp, wet knife. Serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi.

Experiment with different fillings like tuna, cream cheese, or pickled radish. With practice, you’ll master this simple yet satisfying dish!
