Steaming shrimp is a healthy, quick, and delicious way to enjoy this seafood favorite. Follow this simple guide to perfectly tender, flavorful shrimp every time.
Ingredients & Tools:
- 1 lb fresh or frozen shrimp (peeled and deveined, tails on or off)
- 1 inch ginger, sliced
- 2 green onions, chopped
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- Steamer basket or pot with a lid
- Water
Steps:
1. Prep the Shrimp: Rinse shrimp under cold water and pat dry. If using frozen, thaw completely. Leave tails on for presentation or remove for convenience.
2. Set Up the Steamer: Pour 1–2 inches of water into a pot. Bring to a boil, then place the steamer basket inside, ensuring water doesn’t touch the basket.
3. Arrange the Shrimp: Lay shrimp in a single layer in the basket. Top with ginger slices and green onions.
4. Steam: Cover and cook for 3–5 minutes (depending on size) until shrimp turn pink and opaque. Do not overcook, or they’ll become tough.
5. Serve: Immediately transfer shrimp to a plate. Drizzle with soy sauce and sesame oil. Garnish with extra green onions if desired.
Tips: For extra flavor, add a splash of rice wine or a sliced chili to the shrimp before steaming. Enjoy as a light meal or with steamed rice!
