How to Make Red Bean Zongzi: A Step-by-Step Guide

Red bean zongzi, a beloved traditional Chinese snack, combines sweet red beans with glutinous rice for a soft, flavorful treat. Here’s a simple guide to making it at home.

Ingredients: Glutinous rice (500g), dried red beans (200g), bamboo leaves (30-40), soaked in water overnight; salt (1 tsp), sugar (to taste), and cooking twine.

Steps:

1. Prepare ingredients: Soak red beans for 4 hours until soft. Rinse glutinous rice and drain. Soak bamboo leaves in warm water for 2 hours to soften, then wipe dry.

2. Cook beans: Boak red beans in water for 30 minutes until tender. Drain, mix with a pinch of salt, and set aside.

3. Wrap zongzi: Take 2 bamboo leaves, overlap them, and fold into a cone shape. Add 2 tbsp rice, then 1 tbsp red beans, and top with more rice to fill ¾ full. Fold the leaves tightly, tucking the edges to form a pyramid shape. Secure with twine.

4. Cook: Place zongzi in a large pot, add water to cover, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 2-3 hours. Turn off heat and let sit for 1 hour to enhance flavor.

Serving: Remove twine, unwrap, and enjoy warm or cold. For extra sweetness, drizzle with honey or sugar syrup.
