Spinach buns are a nutritious and visually appealing twist on traditional steamed buns, blending vibrant green color with a mild, earthy flavor. Here’s a simple guide to making them at home.
Ingredients:
- 300g all-purpose flour
- 150g fresh spinach, blanched and chopped
- 2g active dry yeast
- 15g sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 120ml warm milk (or water)
- 1 tbsp cooking oil
Steps:
1. Prepare the spinach: Wash spinach thoroughly, blanch in boiling water for 1 minute, then drain and blend into a smooth puree. Let it cool to room temperature.
2. Make the dough: In a large bowl, mix flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Gradually add spinach puree and warm milk, knead into a smooth dough (about 10 minutes). Add oil and continue kneading until the dough is elastic.
3. First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
4. Shape the buns: Punch down the dough, divide it into 8–10 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten slightly into a bun shape. Place them on parchment paper.
5. Second rise: Cover the buns and let them rise for 30 minutes.
6. Steam: Arrange buns in a steamer, leaving space between them. Steam over high heat for 15–18 minutes. Turn off the heat and let them rest for 5 minutes before serving.
