How to Make Braised Beef and Potatoes: A Comprehensive Guide

Braised beef and potatoes is a comforting, hearty dish loved worldwide. Here’s a step-by-step guide to achieving tender beef and flavorful spuds.

Ingredients: 500g beef brisket (cut into 2cm cubes), 4 potatoes (peeled and halved), 1 onion (sliced), 3 garlic cloves (minced), 1 tbsp tomato paste, 500ml beef broth, 2 soy sauces, 1 tbsp sugar, 1 star anise, 1 cinnamon stick, and cooking oil.

Steps:

1. Sear the Beef: Heat oil in a pot over medium-high heat. Brown beef cubes until caramelized (3-4 mins per side). Remove and set aside.

2. Sauté Aromatics: In the same pot, sauté onions and garlic until fragrant. Add tomato paste, cook for 1 minute.

3. Simmer: Return beef to the pot. Add soy sauces, sugar, star anise, cinnamon, and broth. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 1.5 hours.

4. Add Potatoes: Stir in potatoes. Simmer for 20-30 more minutes until beef is fork-tender and potatoes are soft.

5. Thicken (Optional): For a richer sauce, mix 1 tsp cornstarch with 2 cold water, add to the pot, and stir until slightly thickened.

Serving: Garnish with green onions. Enjoy with rice or crusty bread to soak up the savory sauce. This dish balances melt-in-your-mouth beef with creamy potatoes, perfect for cold days!
