How to Make Steamed Buns: A Comprehensive Guide

Steamed buns, a staple in many Asian cuisines, are soft, fluffy, and versatile. Here’s a step-by-step guide to making them at home.

Ingredients: For 12 buns, you’ll need 500g all-purpose flour, 5g active dry yeast, 10g sugar, 5g salt, 300ml warm milk (≈40°C), and 20g vegetable oil.

Steps:

1. Activate yeast: Mix yeast, sugar, and warm milk. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.

2. Make dough: Combine flour and salt in a large bowl. Pour in yeast mixture and oil. Knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

3. First rise: Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours until doubled.

4. Shape buns: Punch down dough, divide into 12 equal portions, and roll into balls. Flatten each slightly, then fold edges toward the center and pinch to seal.

5. Second rise: Place buns on parchment paper, cover, and let rise for 30 minutes.

6. Steam: Arrange buns in a steamer, leaving space between them. Steam over high heat for 15–18 minutes. Turn off heat and let rest for 5 minutes before opening the lid to prevent deflation.

Tips: For sweeter buns, add 2 tbsp sugar. For variety, stuff with minced pork or red bean paste before shaping. Enjoy fresh or store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days!
