A Guide to Making Small Bread: Simple Recipes and Tips

Small breads, from soft dinner rolls to savory mini loaves, are versatile, delicious, and perfect for any occasion. Here’s a basic guide to get you started.

Basic Soft Dinner Rolls

Ingredients: 3 cups all-purpose flour, 1 cup warm milk, 2 tbsp sugar, 2 tsp active dry yeast, 1 egg, ½ tsp salt, 3 tbsp melted butter.

Method: Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm milk; let sit for 5 minutes until frothy. Mix in egg, flour, salt, and butter until a dough forms. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour. Punch down, divide into 12 balls, and place in a greased baking pan. Let rise for 30 minutes, then bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes until golden.

Savory Herb Mini Loaves

Add 1 tbsp dried herbs (rosemary, thyme) and ½ cup grated cheese to the basic dough for a flavorful twist. Shape into small loaves and bake as above.

Sweet Cinnamon Rolls

Roll out the dough into a rectangle, spread butter, sprinkle cinnamon and sugar, roll tightly, and slice into 8-10 pieces. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20-25 minutes.

Tips: For extra softness, brush rolls with melted butter after baking. Experiment with add-ins like chocolate chips, nuts, or dried fruit. Enjoy your homemade small breads fresh from the oven!
