How to Make Garlic Chinese Broccoli: A Simple Guide

Garlic Chinese broccoli (蒜蓉菜心) is a quick, healthy, and flavorful dish popular in Chinese cuisine. Here’s a simple guide to making it perfectly every time.

Ingredients:

- 500g fresh Chinese broccoli (gai lan), washed and trimmed

- 4-5 cloves garlic, minced

- 1 tbsp cooking oil

- 1 tsp soy sauce

- ½ tsp oyster sauce (optional)

- Salt to taste

- ½ tsp sugar (to balance flavors)

Steps:

1. Prepare the broccoli: Trim the tough bottoms of the stalks. Cut into 5-6 cm lengths. Blanch in boiling water for 1-2 minutes until tender-crisp. Drain and set aside.

2. Sauté garlic: Heat oil in a wok over medium-low heat. Add minced garlic and stir-fry until fragrant (about 30 seconds) – avoid browning to prevent bitterness.

3. Combine: Add the blanched broccoli to the wok. Toss well to coat with garlic oil.

4. Season: Drizzle with soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), salt, and sugar. Stir-fry for 1 minute until evenly heated.

Tips: For extra crunch, stir-fry the broccoli briefly without blanching first. Serve hot with steamed rice for a complete meal. This dish highlights the harmony of garlic’s aroma and broccoli’s freshness, making it a versatile side for any occasion.
