How to Make Braised Beef with Carrots: A Step-by-Step Guide

Braised beef with carrots is a hearty, comforting dish that tenderizes tough beef into melt-in-your-mouth perfection while infusing carrots with a rich, savory flavor. Here’s a simple yet detailed guide to mastering this classic recipe.

Ingredients: 500g beef brisket (cut into 2-inch cubes), 4 carrots (peeled and halved), 1 onion (quartered), 3 garlic cloves (smashed), 1 tbsp ginger (sliced), 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp oyster sauce, 1 tsp five-spice powder, 1 cinnamon stick, 3 star anise, 500ml beef broth, 2 tbsp cooking oil, salt, and sugar to taste.

Steps:

1. Sear the Beef: Heat oil in a pot over medium-high heat. Add beef cubes and sear until browned on all sides. Remove and set aside.

2. Sauté Aromatics: In the same pot, sauté onion, garlic, and ginger until fragrant. Return beef to the pot.

3. Simmer: Add soy sauce, oyster sauce, five-spice powder, cinnamon, and star anise. Stir in beef broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 1.5 hours.

4. Add Carrots: Place carrots on top of the beef. Simmer for another 30-40 minutes until carrots are tender and beef is fork-tender.

5. Season: Adjust salt and sugar. Simmer uncovered for 5 minutes to thicken the sauce.

Serving: Serve hot with steamed rice or crusty bread. The dish pairs beautifully with a glass of red wine. Enjoy the tender beef and naturally sweet carrots in every bite!
