Braised Pork with Quail Eggs: A Step-by-Step Guide

Braised pork with quail eggs is a comforting Chinese dish that tenderizes meat in a savory-sweet sauce while adding delightful bite-sized eggs. Here’s a simple recipe to recreate it at home.

Ingredients: 500g pork belly (cut into 2cm cubes), 20 quail eggs (boiled, peeled), 3 tbsp soy sauce, 2 tbsp dark soy sauce, 1 tbsp sugar, 1 tbsp Shaoxing wine, 1 star anise, 1 cinnamon stick, 3 slices ginger, 2 cloves garlic, and cooking oil.

Steps:

1. Prep the pork: Boil pork cubes in boiling water for 5 minutes to remove impurities. Drain and rinse.

2. Sear the meat: Heat oil in a wok. Stir-fry pork until golden brown, then add ginger, garlic, and star anise until fragrant.

3. Simmer: Add soy sauces, sugar, Shaoxing wine, and enough water to cover the pork. Bring to a boil, then simmer on low heat for 40 minutes until tender.

4. Add quail eggs: Gently place peeled quail eggs into the pot. Simmer for another 10-15 minutes, allowing them to absorb the sauce.

5. Thicken the sauce: Increase heat slightly to reduce the sauce until it thickens, coating the meat and eggs evenly.

Serving: Garnish with chopped green onions and enjoy with steamed rice. The combination of melt-in-your-mouth pork and flavorful quail eggs makes this dish a crowd-pleaser!
