How to Make a Delicious Chocolate Cake Roll

A chocolate cake roll, or "roulade," is a delightful dessert featuring a light, sponge-like cake rolled around a rich filling. Here’s a simple guide to baking this treat at home.

Ingredients: For the cake, you’ll need 4 eggs (separated), 60g sugar, 40g cocoa powder, 40g all-purpose flour, and 1 tbsp melted butter. For the filling, 200ml heavy cream (whipped to stiff peaks) and 2 tbsp powdered sugar work perfectly.

Steps:

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a 10x15-inch baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Make the batter: Whisk egg yolks with 30g sugar until pale. In a separate bowl, beat egg whites with the remaining 30g sugar until glossy peaks form. Gently fold the yolks into the whites, then sift in cocoa powder and flour, folding until just combined. Drizzle in melted butter.

3. Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Let it cool slightly.

4. Assemble: Dust a clean kitchen towel with powdered sugar. Invert the cake onto the towel, peel off parchment, and spread whipped cream evenly. Roll tightly from the short end, using the towel to help. Chill for 1 hour before slicing.

This versatile dessert can also be filled with chocolate ganache or fresh berries. Enjoy your homemade chocolate cake roll!
