How to Make Red Bean Paste Rolls: A Simple Guide

Red bean paste rolls are a beloved soft, sweet snack, perfect for breakfast or afternoon tea. Here’s an easy step-by-step guide to making them at home.

Ingredients: For the dough, you’ll need 250g all-purpose flour, 3g active dry yeast, 30g sugar, 1 egg, 120ml warm milk, and 20g butter. For the filling, 200g store-bought or homemade red bean paste is ideal.

Steps:

1. Activate the yeast: Mix yeast with warm milk and a pinch of sugar; let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.

2. Make the dough: Combine flour, sugar, and egg in a bowl. Pour in the yeast mixture and knead into a smooth dough. Add softened butter and knead until elastic (about 10 minutes).

3. First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

4. Shape the rolls: Punch down the dough and roll it into a rectangle (about 30x20cm). Spread red bean paste evenly, leaving a 1cm border. Roll tightly like a swiss roll and seal the edge.

5. Second rise: Place the roll on a baking tray, cover, and let it rise for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

6. Bake: Brush the top with milk or egg wash. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden. Cool slightly before slicing.

Tips: For extra flavor, add a pinch of salt to the dough or sprinkle sesame seeds on top before baking. Enjoy these fluffy, sweet rolls with a cup of tea!
