How to Make Steamed Buns: A Step-by-Step Guide

Steamed buns, or *mantou*, are a staple in Chinese cuisine, loved for their soft, fluffy texture and versatility. Making them from scratch is simple, and here’s a detailed guide to perfect results.

Ingredients: You’ll need 500g all-purpose flour, 300ml warm water (35-40°C), 5g active dry yeast, 10g sugar, and a pinch of salt. Optional: 1 tsp vanilla extract for extra fragrance.

Steps:

1. Activate yeast: Mix yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

2. Knead the dough: Combine flour, salt, and yeast mixture. Knead for 10-15 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add a little flour if too sticky.

3. First rise: Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.

4. Shape the buns: Punch down the dough, divide it into equal portions (about 80g each), and roll each into a smooth ball.

5. Second rise: Place the buns on parchment paper, cover, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

6. Steam: Bring water to a boil in a steamer. Arrange buns with space between them, steam on high heat for 15-20 minutes. Turn off the heat and let them sit for 5 minutes before opening the lid.

Tips: For softer buns, add a bit of milk or oil to the dough. Serve plain with dishes or fill with red bean paste, pork, or vegetables for variety. Enjoy your homemade steamed buns!
