Black Forest Cake Recipe Guide

Black Forest Cake, or Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, is a classic German dessert renowned for its rich chocolate layers, whipped cream, and sour cherries. Here’s a concise guide to crafting this iconic treat.

Ingredients:

- Cake: 6 eggs, 1 cup sugar, ⅔ cup flour, ⅔ cup cocoa powder, 1 tsp baking powder.

- Filling: 2 cups heavy cream, ¼ cup powdered sugar, 1 tsp vanilla extract.

- Syrup: 1 cup pitted sour cherries (canned or fresh), 2 tbsp cherry brandy (Kirsch), 2 tbsp sugar.

- Garnish: Chocolate shavings, extra cherries.

Steps:

1. Bake the cake: Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Separate eggs; beat whites until stiff, then fold in yolks and sugar. Sift flour, cocoa, and baking powder, gently fold into the mixture. Pour into a greased 9-inch springform pan and bake for 25–30 minutes. Cool completely.

2. Prepare syrup: Simmer cherries, sugar, and Kirsch for 5 minutes until slightly thickened. Let cool.

3. Whip cream: Chill cream, then beat with powdered sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks form.

4. Assemble: Split the cake into three layers. Brush each layer with cherry syrup. Spread whipped cream over the first layer, add cherries, then repeat. Top with the final layer, cover the cake with remaining cream, and garnish with chocolate shavings and cherries.

Chill for at least 4 hours before serving to let flavors meld. Enjoy this decadent blend of chocolate, cream, and cherry!
