Chop Suey: A Versatile Culinary Guide

Chop suey, a beloved stir-fry dish with roots in Chinese-American cuisine, is celebrated for its flexibility and vibrant flavors. While recipes vary, the core method remains simple, allowing endless customization with proteins, vegetables, and sauces.

Start by preparing ingredients: thinly slice 200g of protein (chicken, beef, tofu, or shrimp) and chop an assortment of vegetables—bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, onions, and mushrooms. For the sauce, whisk together 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp oyster sauce, 1 tsp cornstarch, 1 tsp sugar, and ½ cup broth or water.

Heat 2 tbsp oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat. Stir-fry the protein until lightly browned, then remove. Add harder vegetables (carrots, broccoli) first, stir-frying for 2-3 minutes, followed by softer ones (peppers, mushrooms). Return the protein to the wok, pour in the sauce, and toss everything until coated and glossy (1-2 minutes).

Serve hot over rice or noodles. Garnish with sesame seeds or green onions for extra flair. The beauty of chop suey lies in its adaptability—swap ingredients based on preference or season. From crisp veggies to tender meats, this dish promises a quick, delicious meal that’s as unique as the cook. Enjoy experimenting with your favorite combinations!
