How to Make Oat Bread: A Comprehensive Guide

Oat bread is a nutritious and hearty alternative to traditional bread, perfect for breakfast or toast. Here’s a simple guide to baking it at home.

Basic Ingredients:

- 2 cups rolled oats (plus extra for coating)

- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

- 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast

- 1 tbsp sugar or honey

- 1 tsp salt

- 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)

- 2 tbsp olive oil or melted butter

Steps:

1. Prepare the Dough: In a bowl, mix yeast, warm water, and sugar; let sit for 5 minutes until frothy. In a large bowl, combine oats, flour, and salt. Pour the yeast mixture and oil into the dry ingredients, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.

2. Knead: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If too sticky, add a little flour.

3. First Rise: Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

4. Shape and Second Rise: Punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased 9x5 inch pan. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.

5. Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown. Tap the bottom—it should sound hollow. Cool before slicing.

Variations: Add raisins, nuts, or cinnamon for extra flavor. For a denser texture, use steel-cut oats or substitute half the flour with whole wheat flour. Enjoy your homemade oat bread toasted with butter or jam!
