Milk bread, known for its soft, fluffy texture and subtle sweetness, is a beloved staple worldwide. Here’s a simple guide to making it at home.
Start with basic ingredients: 300ml warm milk (about 35°C), 50g sugar, 5g active dry yeast, 500g bread flour, 1 large egg, and 10g salt. For extra richness, add 30g unsalted butter.
Begin by activating the yeast: mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast, and let sit for 10 minutes until frothy. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt, then pour in the yeast mixture and egg. Knead until a smooth dough forms, then add softened butter and knead for 15–20 minutes until elastic.
Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size. Punch down the dough, divide it into portions, and shape into balls or loaves. Place them in a baking tin, cover, and let rise again for 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Brush the tops with milk or egg wash for a golden crust. Bake for 25–30 minutes until risen and lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
For variations, add vanilla extract, raisins, or a cinnamon swirl. Enjoy plain or with butter, jam, or soup—this versatile bread is sure to become a favorite!
