How to Make Saucy Tofu: A Comprehensive Guide

Saucy tofu is a versatile and delicious dish loved for its silky texture and rich flavors. Here’s a simple guide to mastering it at home.

Ingredients: Firm tofu (pressed to remove excess water), soy sauce, oyster sauce, garlic, ginger, green onions, and your choice of vegetables like mushrooms or bell peppers. For protein, add minced pork or shrimp. Cornstarch is essential for thickening the sauce.

Step 1: Prepare the Tofu. Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes. Lightly pan-fry them in neutral oil until golden on all sides to enhance texture—this step prevents the tofu from breaking later.

Step 2: Make the Sauce. In a bowl, mix 2 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp oyster sauce, 1 tsp sugar, 1 tsp cornstarch, and ½ cup water. Adjust seasoning to taste.

Step 3: Sauté Aromatics. Heat oil in a wok, sauté minced garlic and ginger until fragrant. Add meat or vegetables and stir-fry until cooked.

Step 4: Combine and Simmer. Pour the sauce into the wok, bring to a gentle boil, then add the tofu cubes. Reduce heat and simmer for 2–3 minutes, gently spooning the sauce over the tofu to coat evenly.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve. Sprinkle with chopped green onions or sesame seeds. Pair with steamed rice for a satisfying meal.

Variations: For a spicy kick, add chili paste. Replace soy sauce with tamari for a gluten-free version. Try adding basil or a drizzle of sesame oil for extra depth.

With its customizable flavors, saucy tofu is a quick, healthy, and crowd-pleasing dish perfect for any occasion!
