How to Make Soy Milk: A Comprehensive Guide

Soy milk, a nutritious and versatile plant-based drink, is easy to prepare at home with just a few simple steps. Here’s a detailed guide to making perfect soy milk every time.

First, soak dried soybeans in water for 8–12 hours (or overnight) until they double in size. Drain and rinse the beans thoroughly. For a smoother texture, peel the skins by rubbing the beans between your hands under running water—this step is optional but highly recommended.

Next, blend the soaked beans with fresh water in a ratio of 1:6 (1 part beans to 6 parts water) until a smooth puree forms. Strain the mixture through a cheesecloth or fine-mesh sieve into a pot, squeezing the pulp to extract all the liquid. This yields fresh, raw soy milk.

To make it safe to drink, heat the strained milk in a pot over medium heat, stirring constantly to prevent sticking. Bring it to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5–10 minutes. For added flavor, sweeten with sugar, dates, or a pinch of salt during the last 2 minutes of cooking.

For a richer version, blend in soaked almonds, oats, or a teaspoon of vanilla. Store leftover soy milk in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Enjoy it hot, chilled, or use it in smoothies and recipes. Homemade soy milk is free from additives and full of protein, making it a healthy alternative to dairy!
