A Guide to Homemade Bread: Mastering the Basics

Baking homemade bread is a rewarding craft that fills your kitchen with warmth and aroma. While recipes vary, most follow core steps to achieve a perfect loaf.

Start with ingredients: 500g bread flour, 7g active dry yeast, 10g salt, and 325ml warm water (about 35°C). Combine yeast and a pinch of sugar in warm water; let it foam for 5 minutes to activate. Mix flour and salt in a large bowl, then pour in the yeast mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for 10–15 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size. Punch down the dough to release air, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased pan or on a baking sheet. Let it rise again for 30–45 minutes.

Preheat your oven to 220°C. For a golden crust, slash the top with a knife. Bake for 25–30 minutes until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Experiment with additions like herbs, cheese, or dried fruit to customize your bread. With practice, you’ll master this timeless skill and enjoy the simple pleasure of fresh-baked bread.
